Oral Hygiene and the Environment – Mouthwash

The daily oral health routine often includes mouthwash whether used once or twice daily it is a necessity for many. As with all cosmetics, beauty products, cleaners, and household detergents, what isn’t used is washed down the drain. As many mouthwashes have alcohol in them, those who refrain from or avoid alcohol do have some natural alternatives.

Other common ingredients in mouthwash may include:
• Formaldehyde
• Sodium laurel sulfate
• Polysorbate
• Cetylpyridinium Chloride
• Benzalkonium Chloride

Many of these ingredients are toxic and what isn’t swallowed is ultimately drained away and enters the water system.. The toxic soup that goes down the drain ends up in our waterways and ultimately the natural environment.

There are green and alcohol free alternatives available. If purchasing a bottle of mouthwash from the store, just check the ingredients list first. Or it is relatively simple to make your own mouthwash. The following recipes have each been tried and tested by @InherentSC with a short summary of each following the directions.
