A Scentual Mood

Many psychologists agree that particular scents will have a positive impact on a person’s mood, attitude, and performance. This is not to say that scents have an effect on people, rather that people will put sentiment to odours. A pleasant experience in a field of lilacs may make you calm when you use lilac scented laundry detergent in the same way that the smell of patchouli may make you feel as though you are in a relaxing yoga class.

The way we feel about scents influences the beauty products we use. Many will wonder why someone chooses to buy a soap that they think smells like a dirty hippie instead of a tropical oasis, when the choice was made neurologically. A great memory can be lying in a hammock sipping a Pina Coloda in the Caribbean, or it may be at a 2 day outdoor music festival with a large group of friends.

Although there are some scents that have a calming effect on everyone, such as vanilla or jasmine. There are also some scents that help induce sleep like lavender. In addition, there is one thing that psychologists agree can help relax everyone, and that is nature.
Going for a walk in the woods, or even looking at pictures of a forest have a calming effect. This would mean that a beauty product that has a smell like a forest just after it rains, or a natural woodsy smell, would also help calm a person. So those working in the city without the opportunity to go for a walk in the woods or sniff a vanilla latte, it is advisable to keep some hand cream in your desk that has one of your favourite smells.
